Area code 206 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the city of Seattle, Washington and most of its surrounding suburbs. It was one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947. Initially, it covered the entire state of Washington.
Due to increasing demand for telephone numbers, the area code was split in 1957, with eastern Washington being assigned area code 509. In 1997, the area code was further reduced in size by the creation of area code 425 for the Eastside suburbs and area code 253 for the southern Puget Sound region.
Today, area code 206 covers Seattle, Vashon%20Island, Bainbridge%20Island, and portions of Shoreline and Burien.
